The 5 Latin-American Dances composed of Intl Ballroom Dances

Cha-Cha

Originally from Cuba, this playful dance, is based on a rhythm introduced into the Danzon (the official genre and dance of Cuba)  by Enrico Jorrin a very popular Cuban singer, composer and band-leader during the 1950’s. This dance is very popular in social gatherings as it brings a sensation of lightness and good mood. This dance is characterized by lots of hip action.

Samba

Originally from Brazil, this colorful dance is based on the Brazilian Maxixe and was born just after the Aboliation of Slavery. As such, it is the ultimate expression of freedom and joy of living. The Brazilian Maxixe was then popularised in the USA by Irene and Vernon Castle, circa 1914. This dance is characterized by much bouncing action.

Rumba

Rumba was brought to Cuba by enslaved Africans and popularised in the 1920’s by Xavier Cugat and his famous Band. Rumba was later standardized in the 1950’s and it’s tempo has been slowed down drastically. It is a sophisticated dance and many people consider it to be the most passionate and romantic of all.

Jive

Originally from the USA, Jive was developed from Lindy Hop, Jittrbug, Twelve-Bar Blues and Boogie, all based on Afro-American music. It was brought to Europe by American soldiers during the Second World War. Jive helps you liberate your energy and is quite athletic. It is characterized by lots of swing action.

Paso Doble

Originally from Spain and inspired by the Matador choreography, Paso Doble was also influenced by Flamenco dancing. It later developped in France circa 1916. It is characterized by the superb and serious attitude of the dancers evolving together in the shape of a march. Paso Doble is highly motivational!

The 5 Standard Dances composed of Intl Ballroom Dances

Slow Waltz

Slow Waltz appeared in the 19th Century in the USA and was initially called « Boston ». It was later brought to Europe in the 20th Century and is one of the most famous Ballroom Dances. So much so that it has now become a must for any social gathering. It is fairly romantic, soft and elegant.

Vienniese Waltz

In spite of what it’s name suggests, Viennise Waltz comes from German popular dance called « Landler » and it can be traced back to the 17th Century. The most amblematic composers for Vienniese Waltz are part of the famous Strauss family, namely Johann Strauss Father and Son. Vienniese Waltz is melodious and energetic!

Quickstep

Quickstep appeared in the 20th Century and it’s history is harder to trace back as it is a playful combination of Fox Trott, Charleston, Ragtime and Onestep and was influenced by the advent of Swing. It is rhythmic and joyful.

Slow Fox

Originally from the USA, Slow Fox derives from Fox Trott introduced by Henry Fox circa 1913. This dance became more and more popular in the 1930’s as its tempo was gradually slowed down. Slow Fox requires knowledge of all the other Standard Dances. It is gracious and sophisticated as dancers look like they are gliding on the dance floor.

Tango

Standard Tango derives from Argentinian Tango danced in the 18th Century in the streets of Buenos Aires and later developped in Europe in the 20th Century. Its popularity is timeless as it is sensual but with temperament.

Classes in Swing Dances

Swing dances can be described as a cluster of dances based on the Jazz music groove. Swing dances blossomed from the year 1920 to circa 1940 and at these times hundreds of styles cohabited, mixed or were intertwined! Swing music has lived on over since, influencing each new generation of dancers so that Swing dances are still evolving. Syncopated and bouncy, Swing dances are the expression of freedom and joy, and definitely arouse a feeling of happiness.

The 3 Swing Dances learned in our Swing Classes

Lindy Hop

Originally from Cuba, this playful dance, is based on a rhythm introduced into the Danzon (the official genre and dance of Cuba)  by Enrico Jorrin a very popular Cuban singer, composer and band-leader during the 1950’s. This dance is very popular in social gatherings as it brings a sensation of lightness and good mood. This dance is characterized by lots of hip action.

Solo Jazz

Partnered swing dances have an emphasis on improvisation. Therefore, Swing dances also refer to a wide variety of solo steps performed on the Jazz groove. Nowadays, Solo Jazz has become a type of dance by itself. Solo Jazz allows you to unleash your creativity, to reconnect to your body and leave behind the cargo of your mind.

Charleston

Embark for Paris, the Champs Elysées during the Roaring Thirties. Born in South Carolina, Charleston conquered Europe thanks to famous African American dancers such as the talented Josephine Baker. It continued to flourish in France, while it drifted toward Lindy Hop in the USA. Charleston reflects the contrasted society of these times. It is elegant and wild at the same time and requires a certain degree of stamina!

THE PUERTO RICAN SALSA

We also offer courses of PUERTO RICAN SALSA. PUERTO RICAN SALSA derives from American Mambo and it is fairly sensual and sophisticated. As such, its style and character are close to the 5 Ballroom Latin-American dances described above. At this time, Puerto Rican dances will only be offered on a private lesson bases.
